Clay 101: What is Clay?

“Every time I sit at the wheel or begin to create, I feel as though I have been honored and called to meditation and active prayer, called to create and engage others in thoughtful response or use in the objects of the mind and hands.” –Claude W. Smith, III

Join Claude W. Smith, III, retired Western New Mexico University professor and accomplished ceramicist for Clay 101: What is Clay? The workshop, which will kick-off CLAY Festival on Saturday, July 23rd from 9:30am-12pm at WNMU McCray Ceramics Studio I, will be a completely free, hands-on, and experiential workshop open to anyone interested in learning more about clay and exploring the art of ceramics.

The workshop will serve as a short but thorough all encompassing introduction to clay, and will include a brief lecture by Claude that will cover topics ranging from the different clay bodies to construction and firing techniques, as well as three demonstrations. The demonstrations will teach attendees how to produce a slab, work on a wheel, and construct a coil pot. All ages, no matter the level of experience, are not only welcome but encouraged to attend, as the workshop is aimed at bolstering local involvement and support of CLAY Festival. Come one, come all!

Claude’s worldview is that of a true ceramicist and potter—he loves pots and the potters who make them. Let him share his passion with you on Saturday, July 23rd from 9:30am-12pm. Register to attend for free by visiting www.clayfestival.com, calling 575-538-5560, or E-mailing amber@silvercitytourism.org.
