The Dona Ana County Commission Monday approved a measure declaring a disaster in the county due to recent flooding.
The Dona Ana County disaster declaration comes after Governor Susana Martinez signed an executive order declaring an emergency due to recent flooding.
The order covers the entire state of New Mexico and makes funding available to the New Mexico Department of Homeland Security and Emergency Management to assist local communities in recovery efforts.
An earthen dam just outside La Union breached, and the Fire District Station became inaccessible to heavy equipment due to flooding and ruts. Utility service was also disputed in the area.
A contingent of county staff attended a community meeting Saturday to listen to concerns and evaluate the situation….which clearly involves an extended period of recovery.
