LAS CRUCES---The three finalists vying for job of Superintendent of the Las Cruces Public Schools will answer questions from the public during a community forum at 6:30 p.m., Thursday, Sept. 29 at the Oñate High School Performing Arts Center, 5700 Mesa Grande Dr. Jo Galvan, LCPS spokeswoman, said the finalists, who will be in Las Cruces for two days of interviews are: Dr. Gregory Ewing of Marietta, GA; Dr. Gregory Rodriguez of Huntsville, TX; and Dr. Arsenio Romero of Roswell, NM.
The three educators were selected from the initial group of 14 qualified applicants from across the country, Galvan said. Earlier on Thursday, the finalists will be interviewed throughout the day by five community-based committees, which will provide feedback to the Board of Education. The committees include students, LCPS staff, teachers, principals, administrators, parents and community members.
“The School Board is open to hearing the opinions from a good cross-section of the community during this stage of the interview process,” Galvan said. “Ultimately, the School Board has the final decision, but it will be based on a lot of input.”
Just before the forum, members of the Superintendent Search Advisory Committee also will meet with the finalists in a meet-n-greet event at Oñate High.

During the forum, each finalist will give a two-minute opening comment to be followed by questions from the audience. Galvan said questions can also be emailed prior to the beginning of the forum at opinions@lcps.net. Members of the League of Women Voters will assist the school district with coordinating the one-hour event , which will be recorded for future broadcast. The district will also web-stream the forum live at www.lcps.tv.
The School Board is conducting its interviews with the finalists on Friday, Sept. 30. During the month of October, the Board members will also visit the finalists’ home communities. A final selection is expected at the beginning of November, Galvan added.
Dr. Gregory Ewing is the chief accountability and research officer for the Cobb County School District in Marietta, Georgia. Previously, he spent 10 years as the district’s curriculum and instruction supervisor. Ewing is also an assistant professor at Kennesaw State University in Georgia, where he has taught for 20 years.
Dr. Gregory Rodriguez is deputy superintendent for the Huntsville Independent School District in Huntsville, Texas. Rodriguez has also served as an assistant superintendent and director of secondary curriculum, instruction and accountability for the San Marcos Consolidated Independent School District in Texas.
Dr. Arsenio Romero is the assistant superintendent for instruction and turnaround for the Roswell Independent School District, in Roswell, NM. Romero worked for LCPS from 2001 to 2014 in several administrative positions. He left LCPS for a position in the Roswell district, where he has served as executive director for school turnaround and assistant superintendent for assessment, accountability and technology before taking on his current position.
