AUSTIN, Texas (AP) — Texas' new proposed K-12 math curriculum standards have drawn fire from a key business group, but been cheered by some educators.
The State Board of Education gave preliminary approval to the 10-year requirements in January and they are up for final passage on Friday.
Texas Association of Business President Bill Hammond addressed the board Wednesday. He said the new curriculum is incoherent in some areas and won't adequately prepare students in algebra.
Other critics told the board that the standards ignored key areas of learning.
But several members of the Texas Association of Supervisors of Mathematics endorsed the new standards, saying they are more focused and concentrated than the previous curriculum.
And some board members worried about trying to drastically modify the standards so close to the final scheduled vote.
