Correction: Keller Moved To State E-mail Account When He Took Office

Tim Keller, Albuquerque Mayor

In a story Aug. 5 about the state auditor's use of a Gmail account, The Associated Press reported erroneously when auditor Tim Keller moved to a state email account. It was when he took office, not after the New Mexico Republican Party complained.

A corrected version of the story is below:

Auditor, state GOP disagree on transparency of Gmail account

Auditor's Gmail account draws criticism from state GOP over transparency issues

SANTA FE, N.M. (AP) — The state auditor's use of a Gmail account to conduct business has raised transparency concerns by the New Mexico Republican Party.

The Santa Fe New Mexican reports State Auditor Tim Keller set up the Gmail account to conduct government business shortly after his election. Spokeswoman Justine Freeman says the email was never for Keller's private use and was always considered public.

Chief of Staff Sunalei Stewart said Keller used the Gmail account during his transition period.

GOP spokesman Patrick Garrett said it's hypocritical for Keller to advocate for government ethics while showing a disregard for transparent government.

New Mexico Foundation for Open Government executive director Susan Boe says the Gmail account is not illegal if the emails can be made available through public records requests.
