County Accepts State Funding For Roads Project; Final Vote On July 14

Dripping Springs Road near Las Cruces

The Dona Ana County Commission Tuesday voted to accept state funding for a major roads project.

The project would pave parts of Baylor Canyon and Dripping Springs Roads.

The proposal has been allotted $9 million dollars in federal funding.

The county is required to cover the remaining 15% of funding and was offered $120,000 from the state department of transportation to do that.

County engineer Robert Arimijo says the vote to accept that state money has not committed the county to the project. He said, “This doesn’t keep them from voting either way for the paving , moving forward with the project , moving forward with a portion of the project or just completely not doing the project at all.”

The County Commission is scheduled to vote on the project on July 14th. Armijo says county staff will be recommending that both roads be paved.

If the road projects are not approved…the $120,000 in state funding could be used for alternative county road projects.
