County To Seize Repeat DWI Suspects' Cars

Drivers caught more than once driving drunk in Bernalillo County can now have their vehicles seized.  Bernalillo County commissioners unanimously approved the new ordinance at their meeting this past week.

Commissioner Wayne Johnson says in a statement that he hopes drivers will think twice about driving drunk if they know they'll lose their vehicles.

The new law allows the sheriff's department to seize vehicles from people previously convicted of DWI or caught driving on a licenses that are suspended or revoked because of a DWI.

A similar law is already in effect in Albuquerque.

Drivers who agree to have their car disabled with a "boot" for 30 days or more can get their cars back. Those who don't agree will have to fight forfeiture proceedings in court.
