The Doña Ana County Sheriff’s Department will be taking part in a nationwide crackdown on drivers who – despite laws that prohibit it – refuse to put their phones down while driving, and they will be using creative patrolling techniques to catch drivers in the act.
The “U Drive, U Text, U Pay” campaign, spearheaded by the Department of Transportation, will utilize high-visibility enforcement along with advertising and media outreach to publicize the enforcement.
The campaign runs April 6 through April 15 and will include roving patrols, strategically-placed spotters and stationary police vehicles prominently placed to observe and cite violators.
In Doña Ana County, the penalty assessment for texting and driving is $86 for the first offense and $111 for the second offense.
