Crash Ends High Speed Pursuit; Driver Arrested

A Las Cruces man who led a Doña Ana County Sheriff’s deputy on a high-speed chase Wednesday night was arrested after his vehicle crashed into a pole on the East Mesa.

Just before 9 p.m., a sheriff’s deputy observed the vehicle traveling well over the posted speed limit near Jornada Road and Engler. As the deputy attempted a traffic stop, the driver reportedly sped up, heading east on Engler.

The driver, 33-year-old Anthony James Crowley, reportedly reached speeds near 80 miles per hour when he approached the intersection of Peachtree Hills and Mesa Grande, where he lost control of the vehicle and crashed into a pole.

Crowley then attempted to flee on foot, but was apprehended by the deputy after a scuffle. He was arrested and transported to the Doña Ana County Detention Center on charges of aggravated fleeing, assault on a peace officer, and resisting arrest.

Because Crowley was on probation at the time of his arrest, he is being held without bond.
