Crews Battle Fires Near Silver City, Fort Stanton

Silver City, New Mexico – SILVER CITY, N.M. (KRWG)
State Forestry spokesman Dan Ware says portions of state road 220 and 380 were closed temporarily because of the Rifle Fire.

Ware says electricity to the Fort Stanton area also was briefly turned off Thursday.

The fire was first spotted Thursday morning and is burning grass along with pinon and juniper trees.

The Miller Fire near Silver City is burning through timber and grass in steep and rugged terrain. It's now 40 percent contained.

Crews on the Miller Fire have been dealing with gusty wind. The fire did moderate a bit Wednesday due to cooler temperatures and higher humidity.
