Crews Respond To Chemical Fire In Mesquite

Crews with Doña Ana County Fire and Emergency Services responded to a fire south of Las Cruces Wednesday after workers at a chemical plant reported seeing smoke coming from a building in the 8000 block of N.M. 478.

Firefighters were dispatched to Crop Production Services at 7:11 a.m. and arrived within five minutes of the call. Upon arrival, fire crews determined a large pile of sulfur had caught fire and efforts were quickly made to have residents within a mile of the plant shelter in place or evacuate at their own will.

There was no immediate threat to the public and the fire was contained by 7:57 a.m.

A total of 12 firefighters responded to the incident and no injuries were reported.

The cause of the fire is currently under investigation.
