Curry County Authorities Probe Killing Of Rancher

Authorities in eastern New Mexico say they know who fatally shot a 73-year-old Curry County rancher during what's described as a physical confrontation over farming land but haven't yet decided whether prosecution is warranted.

Sheriff's deputies found the body of Max Allen of Belleview in front of his home. He had a single gunshot wound to his torso.

The Clovis News Journal reports that authorities know the identity of the shooter and say that man and Allen were involved in an ongoing dispute over land that Allen's family owns.

Undersheriff Wesley Waller says investigators are waiting for autopsy results and other evidence before deciding on whether to press charges.
