DACC: High School Equivalency Exam is First Step to a New Career

Las Cruces – For those students who did not attain high school graduation, a high school equivalency examination provides a pathway to higher education and a career that is challenging and rewarding.

The equivalency examination is an assessment of skills and knowledge that compares to a high school graduate. The exam does not replace graduation from a high school but is an alternative for those who did not complete their studies.

Training to prepare students for the examination is being offered at Doña Ana Community College (DACC) Quintana Learning Center on the first floor of the library building at the Central Campus (located adjacent to NMSU) at 3400 South Espina. All training for the equivalency exam is free of charge at DACC.

Previously the General Equivalency Diploma (GED ®) was the only option. Recently the New Mexico Higher Education Department has also endorsed the HiSet exam which some students have found to be a better option. Both are computer based exams and through classes at the community college students are better prepared to take either test.

The six-week class for this semester begins on October 12.  Students are required to attend an orientation before registering for this class. Students are assessed in several academic levels. They are also provided an account in the learning software program. The orientation fully prepares students to succeed in classes.

For those students who need more training, a 12-week semester of study each fall and spring is conducted with the coursework for the spring semester beginning February 1.  Call 527-7540 for information about orientation dates and times.
