DASO Bomb Squad Provides Training To Army

The Doña Ana County Sheriff’s Department Bomb Squad recently conducted specialized training for more than three dozen U.S. Army troops.

About 41 soldiers from the U.S. Army’s 438th Reserve Military Police Unit received improvised explosive device (IED) recognition and combat post-blast training June 20-21 at a range near Las Cruces. The training was done in partnership with the Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco and Firearms, which has three members on the DASO Bomb Squad.

This type of military training is a new concept to the department, but hopefully one of many, said Deputy Garth Pirtle, DASO’s Bomb Squad commander. “We hope this type of training can be valuable to our military troops, and hope we can continue to offer other opportunities for educational advancement.”

The DASO Bomb Squad has received national recognition at area robotics competitions and is routinely called out to assist southern New Mexico law enforcement agencies with explosive ordnance identification, detection and detonation.
