Las Cruces – The district attorney's office says a Las Cruces felon may face a homicide charge after a man he allegedly hit with a 2-by-4 died months later.
Court documents show 38-year-old Matthias Schackow was indicted in August on a charge of aggravated battery with a deadly weapon after allegedly hitting 64-year-old Harry E. Hunsberger with a board on July 22.
Hunsberger was recently hospitalized and died over the Thanksgiving weekend.
Authorities say the attack happened as Hunsberger was walking his friend's dog by a Las Cruces park. Schackow allegedly ran at Hunsberger and began hitting him with the board and screaming at him.
Hunsberger was struck on the hands and at least once on the left side of his face.
Schackow remains jailed in Las Cruces.
