Debate Resumes Thursday On NM Gun Background Check Legislation

A bill to require background checks on additional gun sales in New Mexico remains before a Senate committee for possible action after lawmakers deadlocked on it in an initial vote.

The Santa Fe New Mexican reports that the Public Affairs Committee voted 4-4 Tuesday night on a motion to advance the bill to another committee.

The committee's chairman, Albuquerque Democrat Sen. Gerald Ortiz y Pino says the bill will be the committee's agenda again Thursday.

The bill would newly require background checks for sales at gun shows.

Albuquerque Democrat Daniel Ivey voted with the committee's Republican members against the bill while the other Democrats on the committee voted for it.
