Deming – Construction of Luna County's first full-scale wind farm has begun.
Oregon-based Element Power says it has started the Macho Springs Wind Farm about 20 miles northeast of Deming. Once completed in August, it will have 28 turbines.
The project will employ 150 workers, including electricians, welders, concrete layers, heavy machine operators and general laborers. The job is being managed by Mortenson Construction, a renewable energy construction contractor, with experience building over 100 wind farms across the United States.
The project is expected to provide more than $8 million in revenue to Luna County over its 20-year life.
Power generated by the 264-foot tall towers will supply more than 20,000 homes. Element Power has contracted with Tucson Electric Power to purchase the electricity.
