Democrat Announces For NM Secretary Of State

Bernalillo County Clerk Maggie Toulouse Oliver says she's running for the Democratic nomination for secretary of state.

Oliver said Monday that if elected as New Mexico's top elections official she wouldn't make her decisions based on partisan politics but would do what's best for the state.

Republican Secretary of State Dianna Duran is expected to seek re-election. She defeated Democratic incumbent Mary Herrera in 2010.

Oliver was appointed clerk in January 2007 by the county commission to an unexpired term after Herrera's election as secretary of state in 2006.

Oliver was elected to a four-year term in 2008 and re-elected in 2012.

The secretary of state's office recently was put in charge of registration of corporations after that duty was shifted from the Public Regulation Commission.
