Despite Law, President Trump Refuses To Enforce Sanctions Against Russia

Commentary: WASHINGTON, D.C. (Jan. 30, 2018) - U.S. Senator Martin Heinrich (D-N.M.), a member of the Senate Select Committee on Intelligence and the Senate Armed Services Committee, released the following statement on the Trump Administration not imposing sanctions on Russia, despite a new law designed to punish Moscow’s interference in the 2016 U.S. election.

“Last year, Congress voted nearly unanimously to punish Moscow for past election interference and to prevent future meddling in U.S. elections. Yet, on the day of the State of the Union, President Trump has ignored the law and the warnings of his own CIA Director that another attack is imminent and chosen not to enforce sanctions against Russia.

“Instead of embracing a muscular response to an attack on the United States, President Trump has caved to Vladimir Putin, putting our national security and American democracy at risk.”
