Detectives Investigate Beating Following Weekend House Party

Doña Ana County Sheriff’s detectives are questioning several people who were reportedly leaving a party early Sunday morning and might have witnessed a fight that left an 18-year-old Las Cruces man in a medically-induced coma. The victim has since regained consciousness, according to detectives.

Just after 1 a.m. Sept. 13, sheriff’s deputies were called to disperse a large party in the 6000 block of Vista de Oro west of Las Cruces. As people were leaving the party, a fight reportedly started in the street. An unidentified man allegedly punched the 18-year-old victim in the head, causing him to fall to the ground.

The victim was then allegedly kicked in the face. An ambulance crew responded and transported the victim to a Las Cruces hospital, but his injuries were so severe that he was subsequently transported to University Medical Center in El Paso.

Witnesses initially described the suspect as a possible New Mexico State University student athlete, but detectives who spoke with officials at the university’s Athletics Department Monday said the man in question – seen in a video of the fight – is not a student at NMSU.

Video of the fight is considered evidence and is not being released to the media at this time.

The case is being investigated as an aggravated assault. Anyone with information that could be helpful in identifying a suspect or suspects is asked to call the Doña Ana County Sheriff’s Department,(575) 525-8810 or Crime Stoppers at 1-800-222-TIPS (8477).  Tips can also be sent via text message to CRIMES (274637) using the keyword LCTIPS.
