Doña Ana County Sheriff’s detectives continue to investigate aSaturday incident in Berino that was initially reported as a drive-by shooting.

The incident happened at around 6:40 p.m. in the 100 block of Feathergrass. According to witnesses, a 34-year-old woman arrived at a house party with five other people in her car. One of the female passengers, 21, reportedly got out of the vehicle and began arguing with another woman who was at the party. During the argument, an unknown male reportedly went into the house and returned, brandishing a rifle. According to witnesses, he fired one round into the ground.

The 21-year-old woman reportedly returned to the vehicle. As the driver of the vehicle was leaving, the same male suspect allegedly chased the vehicle and fired two additional rounds, one of which hit the 34-year-old driver of the vehicle in the back. Another round reportedly shattered the rear glass of the vehicle.

At least three other people received superficial shrapnel wounds.

The people in the vehicle were able to flag down a sheriff’s deputy who was in the vicinity.  The victim was later airlifted to University Medical Center in El Paso where she was treated and released.

According to detectives, the case is gang-related.  The incident remains under investigation, and charges are pending.
