Dona Ana County Steps Up Mosquito Abatement Program

Las Cruces, NM – THE COUNTY'S THREE FOGGER TRUCKS ARE MAKING ROUNDS THROUGHTTHE COUNTY PARTICULARLY IN AREAS NEAR SCHOOLS.
COUNTY OFFICIALS SAY THE VECTOR CONTROL DIVISION IS RESPONDING TO ABOUT FIVE HUNDRED CALLS EACH WEEK.

THE COUNTY IS ALSO INVOLVED IN A COMPREHENSIVE TESTING PROGRAM THAT TRAPS MOSQUITOES WEEKLY FROM DIFFERENT SITES AROUND THE COUNTY AND SENDS THEM TO A LAB FOR EVALUATION. THE TESTING ALLOWS VECTOR CONTROL TO IDENTIFY PROBLEM AREAS AND PRIORITIZE ABATEMENT PROCEDURES.

THE COUNTY ADVISES RESIDENTS TO REMOVE STANDING WATER IN OLD TIRES, BUCKETS, PLASTIC COVERS, AND CONCAVE AREAS TO HELP AVOID LARGE POPULATIONS. STAYING INDOORS IN THE EVENING HOURS IS ADVISED WHEN MOQUITO-BORNE DISEASE WARNINGS ARE IN EFFECT.

VECTOR CONTROL ALSO PROVIDES MOSQUITO LARVA EATING FISH TO PRIVATE RESIDENTS WITH MARSHY LAND OR LARGE BODIES OF WATER. THE FISH CONSUME FIVE TIMES THEIR OWN WEIGHT IN MASQUITO LARVA EACH DAY.

IF YOU WOULD LIKE TO REPORT A MOSQUITO PROBLEM OR FOR MORE ABATEMENT TIPS CALL VECTOR CONTROL AT 575-526-8150.
