Early Voting Underway In Doña Ana County

Early Voting is underway in New Mexico and people in Doña Ana County are heading to the polls.

So far, there have been only six days of early voting in Doña Ana County, and according to County Clerk Lynn Ellins the county is averaging over 1,000 voters a day.

“I just checked a few minutes ago,” Ellins said. “And we have 6,022 early votes, so far. And last Friday, we’d been open 4 days last week; we closed out with almost 4,400. So, that’s better than a thousand a day. And this is very, very heavy, much heavier I believe than it was 4 years ago.”

Ellins says they are working to make sure every voter in the county knows there voting options.

“We have done widespread advertising,” Ellins said. “In the newspapers, and on Facebook pages. And when we’re sending out the new registration cards to people, we’re enclosing a brochure in their telling people when early voting begins, when early voting ends, when Election Day is. Where the locations are. So, we’ve put a lot of money in advertising this event this year.”

Early Voting is underway at the Doña Ana County Government Center, and Clerk Ellins says 6 more locations will open on Saturday.

Early Voting Locations:

Monday through Friday, 8 AM to 5 PM
-    Doña Ana County Government Center - 845 N. Motel Blvd. Las Cruces, NM 88007

Tuesday through Saturday, 11AM to 7PM
-    Anthony Elementary School - 600 N. Fourth St Anthony, NM 88021
-    Doña Ana Community College: Chaparral Learning Center - 755 Prescott Anthony Dr. Chaparral, NM 88081
-    Doña Ana Community College: Hatch Learning Center - 219 East Hill St. Hatch, NM 87937
-    Doña Ana Community College: Sunland Park Center - 3365 McNutt Rd. Sunland Park, NM 88063
-    Sonoma Elementary School - 4201 Northrise St. Las Cruces, NM 88011
-    Thomas Branigan Memorial Library - 200 E Picacho Ave Las Cruces, NM 88001

“There open Tuesday through Saturday,” Ellins said. “This office is open Monday through Friday. We will also be open here the Saturday before the election.”

Ellins says early voting makes voting accessible for more people.

“Primarily, it reduces lines on election day,” Ellins said. “Although we have 40 locations now and you can vote anywhere at those 40 locations. But this will significantly reduce lines on Election Day because I think we will get a very heavy turnout.”

Early voting ends on November 5th.
