Las Cruces – Some Las Cruces residents who live east of I-25 in the East Mesa may be experiencing some water discoloration Thursday. Those in the following areas may be affected:
High Range
Las Colinas
Four Hills
The City's Utilities Department is placing a new water booster pump station into service in that area. The new station has created changes in velocities and flow direction that have caused the water discoloration. This is caused by naturally occurring minerals: iron and manganese in the city's source water.
The discoloration does not pose a public health threat. Even though the water is safe to drink, the City recommends waiting until the water clears to wash laundry. Water Resources crews have been working through out the night flushing hydrants at strategic locations throughout the system to clear the discoloration. Once the water clears in the water mains; residents are advised to flush their home fixtures for a few minutes until the water clears.
Residents who continue to experience discolored water should call the City of Las Cruces Water Resources Office 575/528-3515. The TTY number is 575/528-3541.
