Eddy County Jail Loses Health Accreditation

The Eddy County Detention Center has lost its health service facility accreditation after an accreditation commission faulted the jail for not having oversight conducted by a physician.

The Carlsbad Current-Argus reports that the National Commission on Correctional Health Care informed jail officials in mid-July that the jail's accreditation was being withdrawn.

The jail has a contract with a nurse practitioner rather than a doctor who provides the oversight.

Jail officials say they were given permission to use the nurse practitioner after the jail was unable to hire a doctor, but that the commission later said the jail was given erroneous information.

It will be up to the Eddy County Commission on Tuesday to determine whether appealing the commission's decision would be beneficial to the jail's health service facility.
