El Paso Center For Special Needs Out Of Compliance

A Justice Department review of the El Paso State Supported Living Center shows the center that houses special needs residents has flunked almost 80 percent of its compliance standards.

The report is based on an inspection last summer of the 145-bed center that also provides treatment to people at home. The state is legal guardian for several of the current 126 residents of the center.

The report found issues with diet and nutrition, confirmed incidents of physical abuse and neglect and said the center wasn't adequately addressing causes for injuries.

A spokeswoman for the agency that oversees state centers says a new director took over the El Paso center this month, will be confronting problems and working toward compliance.
