El Paso To Make Record Showing In Austin As Texas Budget Cuts Loom

El Paso – On Wednesday, February 16 and Thursday, February 17, seventy (70) El Paso civic and business leaders will travel to the Texas Capitol in Austin as a part of El Paso Days.

The trip, coordinated by the Greater El Paso Chamber of Commerce, will give El Paso leaders the opportunity to meet with legislators and representatives from state agencies in order to discuss the issues important to the City, County and region.

"I look forward to welcoming my fellow El Pasoans to Austin," said Senator Rodr guez. "This will be a great opportunity for our city's leaders to advocate on behalf of our community."

According to the Chamber, this will be the largest group to take part in El Paso Days, which takes place every two years in conjunction with the legislative session.

The El Paso Days delegation will include representatives from El Paso city and county government; the University of Texas at El Paso, El Paso Community College, the Texas Tech Health Sciences Center, Fort Bliss, and El Paso's non-profit and business communities.

During the two day trip, the delegation will meet with Senator Rodr guez, Senator Carlos Uresti and the five legislators representing El Paso in the Texas House of Representatives. On Wednesday, a resolution commemorating El Paso Days will be read by on both the House and Senate floors.

Members of the group will also meet with Governor Rick Perry, Lieutenant Governor David Dewhurst, House Speaker Joe Straus, and chairs and members of several key Senate and House committees, including Senator Steve Ogden, Chair of Senate Finance; Senator Florence Shapiro, Chair of Senate Education; Senator Judith Zaffirini, Chair of Senate Higher Education; Senator Kirk Watson, and Representative Jim Pitts, Chair of the House Committee on Appropriations.

In addition to the meetings with the elected officials, the group will meet with representatives from state agencies, including the Health and Human Services Commission, the Texas Higher Education Coordinating Board and the Texas Department of Transportation.

To celebrate the group's trip to Austin, there will be "A Taste of El Paso" reception on Wednesday, February 16 from 4:30 to7:00 pm at the Bob Bullock Texas State History Museum. This event is open to all interested in attending.
