El Paso School Employees Resign Amid Allegations

The president of the El Paso Teachers Association says 16 school district employees have resigned over concerns about the authenticity of their GED certificates.

The El Paso Times reports the employees are mostly custodians who left the El Paso Independent School District last week. Custodians can be dismissed for any reason and typically do not belong to the teachers association.

The president says district officials alleged that the GED certificates were illegally purchased instead of earned. She says the resignations raise concerns about the district, such as why officials didn't verify certificates when the employees were hired.

A district spokeswoman declined to comment on why the employees resigned. The district has more than 90 schools and employs nearly 9,000 people.
