Election Panel Holds Hearing On Popular Vote Plan

By KRWG News

Las Cruces, NM – LAS CRUCES, N.M. (KRWG) A bipartisan group plans a public hearing in Las Cruces on a proposal to award New Mexico's Electoral College votes to the national popular vote winner in presidential elections.

The meeting is scheduled Friday at the Dona Ana County clerk's office. It's the final hearing organized by the Center for the Study of Voting, Elections and Democracy at the University of New Mexico.

The proposal calls for New Mexico and other states to join a compact to award their electoral votes to the popular vote winner nationwide.

New Mexico currently gives its electoral votes to the candidate winning the most votes in the state.

The group of than 20 election leaders will forward its findings to the secretary of state, who's making a report to the Legislature.
