Embezzlment Indictment At NM Cattle Growers Association

The former treasurer for the New Mexico Cattle Growers Foundation is accused of embezzling about $296,000 from the organization.

Authorities said Friday that a Curry County grand jury indicted 54-year-old Charles W. Fleming on 20 charges of embezzlement.

Fleming is a former certified public accountant who was the foundation's treasurer in 2010 and 2011.

Prosecutors say about 20 checks issued by Fleming during that time were deposited in his personal bank account in Clovis.

The president of the Cattle Growers contacted authorities in February about concerns over Fleming's accounting practices and that led to an investigation.

Fleming remains held at the Curry County Adult Detention Center on a $250,000 cash-only bond. An arraignment is scheduled within the next two weeks.

It was unclear Friday if Fleming has a lawyer yet.
