U.S. Secretary of Energy Steven Chu will be one of the keynote speakers at New Mexico State University's and honorary co-chairman Congressman Harry Teague's initiative to explore America's energy future at a two-day conference titled "Re-Energize America: Policy, Practice and Possibility for America's Future" Aug. 31 to Sept. 1 at NMSU's Corbett Center Ballrooms.
Secretary Chu was appointed by President Barack Obama in January to lead the U.S. Department of Energy and America's efforts toward a more sustainable energy future.
"New Mexico State University is pleased that U.S. Energy Secretary Steven Chu will be one of the keynote speakers at this month's energy conference," said Interim President Manuel Pacheco. "I wish to thank Congressman Harry Teague for helping to bring such an important voice to NMSU to discuss America's energy future. This university is committed to sharing its research, resources, and its land-grant and academic programs to help New Mexico and the nation explore the many different possibilities to meet this most important goal."
The two-day conference will give participants opportunities to discuss how they can start or grow their own energy venture and hear industry experts in renewable technologies, markets and policies, the energy water nexus and challenges, energy and agriculture, algal biofuels and biomass, solar and wind research, storage and land use, micro-grid and smart-grid systems, natural gas, nuclear power, and many other possibilities to sustain America's energy needs.
"The Re-Energize America conference will be an important opportunity to talk with the people of New Mexico about the enormous possibilities of a clean energy economy. By using energy more wisely and moving to cleaner sources of energy, we can create jobs and grow the economy, reduce our dependence on foreign oil, and protect our planet. Through this conference, Congressman Teague is helping America's innovators and entrepreneurs become a part of a new industrial revolution on clean energy," said Chu.
"Having Secretary Chu join us in Las Cruces for this important conference clearly shows that this Administration sees New Mexico as a key player in our nation's energy future. New Mexico's unique combination of traditional source reserves and the right climate and geography for capitalizing on emerging renewable technologies has positioned us as a true energy leader," Teague said.
Registered participants can hear Secretary Chu speak at the conference's evening reception from 5-7 p.m. Monday, Aug. 31, at Corbett Center Ballroom.
