Federal regulators have issued a new permit aimed at keeping pollution from stormwater runoff in New Mexico's most populated metropolitan area from finding its way into the Rio Grande.
The permit issued Thursday by the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency covers Albuquerque, Rio Rancho, the village of Corrales and the town of Bernalillo. Surrounding Native American communities are also included.
EPA officials say the new permit allows for more flexibility and cooperation among local and tribal governments when it comes to monitoring and planning.
It's not clear how much compliance will cost, but Rio Rancho has already budgeted $20,000 for related expenses.
The EPA says the middle Rio Grande doesn't meet state water quality standards for bacteria and other contaminants. It's also listed as impaired under the Clean Water Act.
