KRWG News – FARMINGTON, N.M. (KRWG) Monday marks the end of a public comment period on the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency's plan to reduce emissions at a coal-fired power plant in northwestern New Mexico.
The federal agency is proposing that selective catalytic reduction systems be installed at the San Juan Generating Station as part of an effort to address regional haze.
Public Service Company of New Mexico says the EPA plan would cost at least $750 million to implement and would boost electric rates for customers.
The 1,800-megawatt plant would have three years to install the controls.
The plant is New Mexico's single largest source of electricity.
The comment period was initially slated to end in mid-March, but that was pushed back to Monday after the EPA received several requests for an extension.
