Republican secretary of state candidate Nora Espinoza says her campaign staff erred when listing a payment of nearly $267,000 to a well-known GOP strategist on her latest finance report.
The Santa Fe New Mexican reports that Thursday's filing listed a payment to a company called Media Strategies.
Espinoza says it should have named McCleskey Media Strategies, which is run by Jay McCleskey, a political adviser to Gov. Susana Martinez.
Espinoza's campaign says there was no attempt to conceal ties to McCleskey. It was the campaign's first reported expenditure to the McCleskey company.
Espinoza, a state lawmaker from Roswell, is challenging Democrat Maggie Toulouse Oliver, the Bernalillo County clerk, for the secretary of state's office. The office oversees elections and the filing of campaign finance reports by candidates and elected officials.
