Experts Say Texas Pursuit Policy Needs Updating

Experts say the Texas Department of Public Safety's policy regarding vehicle pursuits is out of step with evolving national standards.

A review of data by the Austin American-Statesman concluded Texas motorcycle pursuits are especially high-risk.

According to DPS figures, seven motorcyclists died during high-speed chases between 2006 and 2010, a fatality rate three times greater than that of other motorists.

In 2012, a trooper ended a pursuit of a man on a motorcycle that reached speeds of 130 mph after shooting and injuring the man from his vehicle.

DPS says while it limits its troopers' use of their guns to situations where the officer believes a suspect will cause harm to the officer or another, the agency maintains occasional use of firearms from vehicles remains necessary.
