Explosions Near Holy Cross And Calvary Baptist In Las Cruces; No Injuries

Las Cruces Police and several other law enforcement agencies are investigating the circumstances surrounding explosive devices that were detonated Sunday morning at two local churches.  The two explosions caused relatively minor damage at each location and no injuries have been reported.

Shortly after 8 a.m., Las Cruces Police were dispatched to Calvary Baptist Church, at 1800 Locust St., where it was learned a mailbox had been damaged by an explosive device. The mailbox was located on a wall near the administrative entrance to the church. Police learned that several worshippers were gathering inside the church but services had not yet begun at the time of the explosion.

Less than half an hour later police were dispatched to Holy Cross Catholic Church, at 1327 N. Miranda St., where an explosive device detonated inside a trash receptacle near the front entrance of the parish. Church services were underway and parishioners were evacuated through another exit. No injuries were reported.

The explosive device at Holy Cross caused damage to the trash container and to the glass entryway.

Both churches are closed to the public as law enforcement personnel gather evidence and conduct their investigation.

The multi-agency investigation is being conducted by the Las Cruces Police Department; Dona Ana County Sheriff’s Office; New Mexico State Police; New Mexico State University Police; the Bureau of Alcohol, Tabaco, Firearms and Explosives; the Federal Bureau of Investigations; and the Department of Homeland Security.

Anyone with information on who may be responsible for the two explosive devices is asked to call their local law enforcement agency immediately.
