Fallen Firefighters Memorial Sunday In Las Cruces

Las Cruces firefighters will observe the 33rd annual National Fallen Firefighters Memorial this weekend in remembrance of firefighters throughout the U.S. who have died in the line of duty during the past year.

Local firefighters, along with veterans and community members, will raise a Garrison flag at 8 a.m. Sunday, Oct. 12, at Veterans Park on Roadrunner Parkway. Following the posting of the Garrison flag Las Cruces firefighters will have a bell service for the annual Bells Across America, a solemn ceremony in honor of the fallen firefighters.

The public is invited to attend the ceremonies.

Nationwide, 107 firefighters have died in the line of duty over the past year. The names of the fallen firefighters will be added this weekend to the National Fallen Firefighters Memorial at the National Fire Academy in Emmitsburg, Md.

The Las Cruces Fire Department employs 133 professional firefighters and four civilian employees. LCFD operates seven engine companies, two truck companies and responds to roughly 15,000 calls for service each year.
