Fallen NM Sheriff's Sergeant Honored At Memorial

Family, friends and law enforcement officers from across the state gathered Thursday to honor a Sandoval County sheriff's sergeant who died after being struck by a vehicle during a snow storm.

Sgt. Robert Baron's memorial service began with a procession to the Santa Ana Star Center in Rio Rancho, where officers saluted his wife and 10-year-old son as they entered the building.

Baron died a day after he was struck Dec. 5 while directing traffic along Interstate 25 near San Felipe Pueblo.

Baron's wife, Krysia, spoke at the service and expressed forgiveness for the driver who lost control and struck her husband.

The sergeant had been with the sheriff's department for several years.

Sheriff Doug Wood told the crowd Baron was a shining example of what a public servant should be.
