FBI Says El Paso VA Clinic Gunman Was Retired Soldier

The FBI says the man accused of killing a doctor at the El Paso Veterans Affairs Health Care System clinic on Fort Bliss Tuesday was a retired Army solider.  Jerry Serrato, 48, was also a former employee at the clinic.   Serrato was medically retired from the Army in 2007, and left at the rank of specialist.  He received an honorable discharge from the military.

Serrato, who apparently committed suicide in the incident, is accused of shooting Dr. Timothy Fjordbak, 63. Fjordbak was a psychologist for the VA.  The FBI says Fjordbak accused Serrato of making a threat against him in 2013.

The FBI was interviewing hundreds of potential witnesses Wednesday to determine the motive for the shooting.

The clinic will remain closed on Thursday.  However, counseling will be provided for staff and veterans.  The VA website says counselors will be available to meet with veterans starting Thursday at the American Legion Hall #58 on 4724 Vulcan Avenue from 6pm to 8pm.
