Feds Give Texas $31.2 Million For 2011 Wildfires

The Federal Emergency Management Agency has given Texas $31.2 million to help cover the costs of devastating wildfires that spread across the state during a historic drought in 2011.

The federal agency says the funds cover the costs of labor, equipment, materials, air support, meals and lodging. The funding covers about 75 percent of the costs of covering the widespread wildfires that blackened chunks of the state.

Those funds include the costs of fighting a wildfire in September 2011 that charred more than 1,700 structures and killed two people in Bastrop County, about 30 miles east of Austin. It also provides money for at least nine other wildfires that year.

The wildfires in 2011 were fueled by the worst one-year drought in Texas history.
