Feds Investigate Helicopter Crash At UNM Hospital

Investigators are scouring the rooftop of New Mexico's only top-level trauma center to find out what caused a medical helicopter to crash while taking off from University of New Mexico Hospital.

Investigators with the Federal Aviation Administration and the National Transportation Safety Board were at the scene Thursday.

FAA spokesman Lynn Lunsford says once the helicopter is examined and the scene is documented, the wreckage can be removed.

Hospital officials say crews worked overnight to repair four damaged roof joists and to prepare for the chopper to be lifted from the rooftop. A large crane will be used, but it's not clear when the work will be done.

Operations were back to normal at the hospital, and the helicopter's pilot and two crew members have been released. Only the pilot suffered minor injuries.
