Feds: SMU Violated Law On Gender; Sex Harrassment

Southern Methodist University has agreed to provide a safer environment for students who allege sexual assault or harassment.

The U.S. Department of Education on Thursday announced SMU violated Title IX. It bars discrimination on the basis of sex in federally funded education programs or activities.

The agency since 2011 received three complaints alleging SMU did not promptly or equitably respond to reports of gender and sexual harassment and/or sexual assault.

SMU on Thursday said it's committed to a safe and supportive campus environment. The private university in Dallas agreed to track harassment reports and resolutions, improve staff training and develop better procedures with campus police.

About 90 other schools named this year by the Education Department still face Title IX reviews, including University of Texas-Pan American and Cisco Junior College.
