Fight Over Cellphone Leads To Arrest

A Las Cruces man was arrested by Doña Ana County Sheriff’s investigators Thursday night after he reportedly pulled a knife on some of his girlfriend’s family members during an argument about a cell phone.

Sheriff’s investigators were called to the 800 block of Watson Lane shortly after 8 p.m. Thursday after Jorge Adrian Lopez, 21, reportedly stole his girlfriend’s cell phone during an argument and then fled on foot from the home.

Before he could leave, the 20-year-old sister of Lopez’s girlfriend tried to intervene and get her sister’s phone back. Witnesses told investigators Lopez pulled a switchblade-type knife and threatened her if she didn’t get away from him.

Investigators located Lopez with the cell phone in his possession about a block away from the residence.

Lopez is charged with aggravated assault with a deadly weapon, a fourth-degree felony. He was transported to the Doña Ana County Detention Center where he is being held on a $5,000 surety bond.
