Film Screening And Discussion At NMSU Explores Aid In Dying

LAS CRUCES, NM. - In 1994, Oregon became the first state to authorize aid in dying. As a result, any individual who meets the strict requirements of the law can request a prescription to end their life. Since 1994, more than 750 Oregon residents have taken their mortality into their own hands.

On Saturday, May 2, 2015 at 2 p.m., a free screening of the Documentary film How to Die in Oregon will be held. In the film, filmmaker Peter Richardson gently enters the lives of the terminally ill as they consider whether – and when – to end their lives with prescription medication. Richardson examines both sides of this complex, emotionally charged issue.

The film will be presented by Compassion & Choices, the nation’s oldest and largest nonprofit organization working to improve care and expand choice at the end of life. How to Die in Oregon features Compassion & Choices volunteers conducting their end-of-life support services, and explores the organization’s roots.

Dr. David Grube, Compassion & Choices Medical Director, will host a conversation immediately following the film.
