Fire Stations Stocked With Sandbags As Rains Continue

The Doña Ana County Fire and Emergency Services Department has authorized each of its 16 Volunteer Fire Districts to stock and distribute sandbags over the next several days as the remnants of Hurricane Odile soak the county.

The Emergency Operations Center has not been activated, and no major flooding issues have been reported. Crews in various county departments are monitoring historic trouble spots in case a coordinated response becomes necessary.

Because of limited availability, distribution of sandbags will be limited to 10 per residence or business. The sandbags allocated should be placed in doorways where there is a threat of water coming inside. Sandbags will not be issued to protect landscaping or to build water-diversion barricades.

Supplies at each station are limited and available on a first-come, first-serve basis.

Individuals who want additional sandbags can purchase both bags and sand from most area hardware and home-improvement stores.

The National Weather Service forecasts moderate to heavy rains in isolated areas across Doña Ana County through tomorrow as Odile moves through the region.
