First Confirmed NM West Nile Death

New Mexico's most populous county has recorded its first lab-confirmed case of the West Nile virus this year.

The state Department of Health says the infection of a 60-year-old man from Bernalillo County is the fourth confirmed case in New Mexico in 2013.

State Health Secretary Retta Ward says most West Nile virus cases in New Mexico occur in August and September.

The Department of Health announced recently that New Mexico had recorded its first death in 2013 from a West Nile Virus infection.

The person who died was an 83-year-old Curry County man who had been hospitalized for encephalitis, the more severe clinical form of the disease.

Common symptoms of the mosquito-borne West Nile Virus are fever, nausea, headache, and muscle aches.
