Fiscal Cliff Could Cost Las Cruces $1.7 Million

The city of Las Cruces stands to lose $1.7 million through possible federal funding cuts if Congress is unable to come up with a budget deal that keeps the country from going off the "fiscal cliff" that would trigger tax increases and deep spending cuts on Jan. 1.

The Las Cruces Sun-News reports that the possible cuts would reduce federal funding the city receives from the Federal Transit Administration, Federal Aviation Administration, and some Community Development Block Grants.

City Manager Robert Garza said the possible cuts shouldn't have an impact on city services for residents, but it would affect the salaries paid to city staff.
