FootGolf Comes To NMSU

Looking for a hobby where no prior athletic skill is required? FootGolf joins the New Mexico State University Golf Course as a fun alternative to the ever popular sport of golf.

Utilizing the existing course layout, FootGolf is played much like golf, but in half the time. 21-inch holes and special tee boxes were added to accommodate the sport. The teeing area is somewhat up in the fairway and the FootGolf holes are anywhere from 60-80, 160-220 and 260-320 yards.

“You don’t have to have any previous soccer skill,” said Aaron Prieto, former NMSU student. “All you have to do is know how to kick a ball. It’s an interesting take on two classic sports.”

FootGolf began in Europe and in 2011 the American Foot Golf League was established.

Throughout the country golf courses are adding FootGolf to the tee time to help establish revenue, bring an edge to the course and diversify the type of players.

“We view FootGolf as a win win for everyone involved,” said Jason White, head golf professional at the NMSU Golf Course. “We had our kickoff event last week and the sport was well-received. There were close to 70 people who came out. The NMSU women’s soccer team was invited, had a blast and got to interact with soccer fans.”

Offering a sport that brings new customers to the facility is a good opportunity to showcase all the NMSU Golf Course has to offer: restaurant, banquet facilities, meeting spaces and of course, the golf course.

“If someone that is intrigued by FootGolf comes out to our facility and sees what NMSU Golf Course is all about, they will see that it’s more than just a golf course,” said White. “We are also optimistic that FootGolf customers will become golfers. Being out on the golf course, seeing the environment, will hopefully lead them to pick up a golf club and see what golf is all about.”

This will be the second FootGolf course to come to New Mexico, after the Santa Ana Golf Club in Albuquerque. There are more than 250 courses nationwide, throughout 40 states.

“Offering FootGolf also adds value to the university and provides another entertainment activity opportunity for students, faculty, staff and the community of Las Cruces,” White said.

FootGolf is offered Saturdays and Sundays from 7:30-8:30 a.m. and after 5 p.m. on weekdays for $9 and $5 for NMSU students with a valid ID and children.
