Former City Councilman Gets Five Years In Drug Ring

A former West Texas city councilman has been sentenced to five years in federal prison for his role in a Midland-based drug ring.

Joe Anthony Kay was sentenced Friday in Midland.

The 50-year-old ex-councilman in Denver City pleaded guilty last September to conspiracy to possess with intent to distribute controlled substances.

Kay was arrested in August as part of an indictment targeting drug running in Midland, Odessa and Denver City. Investigators say Kay since 2010 conspired to distribute cocaine, heroin, methamphetamine and marijuana.

He's the last of seven people convicted and sentenced to prison for their roles in the trafficking operation.

Denver City is 85 miles northwest of Midland.
