Former Judge Assaulted

By KRWG News

Albuquerque – Authorities say a former New Mexico District Court judge is recovering in an Albuquerque hospital after being assaulted in his Socorro office.

State Police say Thomas Fitch was battered by an unknown assailant sometime Friday. He was found about 7:30 p.m. and taken to University of New Mexico Hospital.

The extent and type of Fitch's injuries haven't been disclosed. Hospital officials said Sunday that they're not allowed to release any patient information.

Police says their investigation is ongoing and they can't provide any case details.

Fitch is in his late 60s. He was the chief judge of the 7th Judicial District and served in Socorro until 2005.

The Albuquerque Journal (http://bit.ly/oCk6Jk) says Fitch resigned from the bench after being charged with drunken driving. He continued his law practice in Socorro.
